On Thursday June 21st Monica (@monicatailor) accompanied Nick Booth (@podnosh) and John Popham (jonhpopham) to London to collect a Big Society Award for Social Media Surgeries.

Social Media Surgeries take place to support community groups, non-profits and charities to help utilise the power of social media to help their cause.

The Big Society Awards were set up by the Prime Minister in November 2010 in order to: "recognise and celebrate individuals, groups or organisations doing exceptional work in their community, going above and beyond to make things better for others". The first 14 award recipients were invited to a reception at 10 Downing Street.

This award is fantastic recognition for the organisers and volunteers who give up their time in order to run Social Media Surgeries across the country and we're especially proud of Monica.

As well as getting the opportunity to visit Downing Street and meet the Prime Minister, Monica, Nick and John were also allowed to take part in a world's first. In a break with the normal security protocols, they were allowed to keep their phones and tweet from inside 10 Downing Street. This gave friends and followers a sneak peak inside one of the most secure buildings in the country. John used Storify to let you see how it panned out too.

Here's hoping that the award helps spread the word about Social Media Surgeries.

Last Tuesday we hosted The Digital Festival edition of Leeds Social Media Surgery. More importantly we celebrated a year of social media surgeries in Leeds. Our very first event was launched during the festival last year and a year on we’re still here offering free one to one advice for community and voluntary groups.

The event is more popular month on month and I'm very proud that I meet people all the time that have heard good things about the events and want to come.

We have collected some great video of people talking about the event which can be seen here

And have a look at what actually happens at a Surgery by going here.

But if you prefer photos then have a look at some we've collected on Flickr.

Leeds Social Media Surgeries usually run on the first Tuesday of every month and are run by myself (Monica Tailor) and John Popham. We couldn't run them without the very generous support of The Round Foundry Media Centre who let us use their centre after hours and supply tea and coffee. And of course a big thanks to our surgeons who offer such valuable advice and expertise for free.

The next surgery is on Tuesday 7th December 2010 between 6pm-8pm. The event is open to non-profits, community, voluntary and arts organisations. You can register to come here http://www.socialmediasurgery.com/events/110.

If you've been to a Leeds Social Media Surgery I would love to hear your story in the comments below.
