We've been invited to speak at O'Reilly's Where 2.0 conference about one of our labs projects, code name: UnYorkshire*. A crowd sourced mobile internet leisure information and itenary service. The aim of this project is to catalogue, collate and curate local insights from members of the general public to build an Unofficial online resource.

During a rainy staycation in North Yorkshire it was striking how the mobile internet tourist experience was far from what it could be, and not only because of the lack of location based services. Yorkshire has some great online tourism resources, check out the fabulous www.yorkshire.com for example, but most content has been produced for more traditional desktop consumption which we felt is a missed opportunity which would be fun and educational for us to explore.

You can read a bit more about the project on the Where 2.0 site.

What is Where 2.0?

O'Reilly describe it as "where the grassroots and leading edge developers building location-aware technology intersect with the businesses and entrepreneurs." This year Where 2.0 is focussing on location aware ideas and services, so hopefully UnYorkshire should fit in well.

You can find out more about Where 2.0 2010 on the Where 2.0 website.

We'll post some information from the presentation here after Where 2.0. If you're going to be there please do get in touch as we'd love to meet up in San Francisco in March/April.

Where 2.0 Conference 2010

* Contrary to the name, UnYorkshire will not be home to expressions of anti-yorkshire sentiment. The whole world knows that Yorkshire rocks, so much so that any online resource of that nature could only serve as a perfect demonstration of an exercise in futility :)
