I spent this weekend taking part in Global Service Jam in Leeds. I've been to a few Service Design events in Leeds and thought this would be a good way to learn more about Service Design and some of the techniques.
The Jammers (18 of us, pictured above) met at Old Broadcasting House on Friday evening for the reveal of the theme, and here it is:
If that left you confused you'll understand why we were left speechless. Once we'd had 5 minutes to absorb the theme we were quickly set to work, using about 200 yellow post it notes we brainstormed the theme (post it notes proved to be VITAL to all projecteering for the weekend).
After much consideration we eventually settled on three areas to look at:
- Social Connections
- Environment
- Crime
Each team took a theme, I was in the environment group.
Saturday morning was spent researching and gaining insights. We used some really interesting service design techniques including:
- Street Safari's - from which we gained insights and identified needs
- Personas - to help us understand the drivers behind the people who might use these services
Once we'd identified the need and come up with our service we role played it, brainstormed the brand values and then late on Saturday/early Sunday we drew up the blueprint for our service. Once we had our blueprint we were able to:
- Identify and sketch out the touchpoints
- Develop the Perfect User Journey
- Try out the user journey using our Lego prototype

The service we came up with was called "Let's Walk". The service aims to encourage bus users to get fit and explore their environment on foot by using their waiting time to walk to the next bus stop.
The service included incentivisation to encourage as many people as possible to get involved. There's more information about it on the Global Service Jam website and you should download the prototype PDF if you want more information about the process we followed (there's a link to our drop box on the project page).
I had a fantastic weekend, learnt some really useful techniques which we'll be using at kilo75 and I'm looking forward to meeting up with fellow Jammers soon.
Global Service Jam ran in nearly 60 locations across the world and produced 203 new service designs - pretty phenomenal eh?

I guess I feel that by making the theme a solution and forcing the teams to brainstorm their own problem spaces we lose a bit of time.
Maybe next year the theme could be a problem (age? distance? hunger? poverty?) and then we could start exploring from the get-go?
I shouldn't complain because on balance it was brill:-)
I learned a lot about new techniques and myself too . . . the whole event was thought provoking and I am sure everyone took a lot away from it.
It is interesting to see what the global teams got up to (see plant jam in Monica's post) and the similarity in ideas and how there is a real desire to do something good. . . but maybe that has something to do with the theme.
I too look forward to seeing GSJLeeds jammers again and hope this is the start of something good.
Go jammers!
Did we succeed?
Thanks for jamming!
